My love for Southeast Asia was born in Singapore in the summer of 1990. Consequently, sixty one years earlier the cycle rickshaw was born on that same small island. And the new mode of transportation caught like wildfire, spreading to every nation in the region by 1950.

Today, the bike taxi has to be one of the most prominent modes of transport on the planet and can be found from Austin, Texas to Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia (where these two sat outside my hotel) and every city in between.

In Indonesia, they go by the name of becak and have been a source of intermittent political strife since the 1970's.
